Market Platform Dynamics, “a consulting firm that advises clients on a variety of media and data analysis platforms, and is chairman of PYMNTS.COM, a multi-faceted media and data analysis platform. He has authored and edited more than ten volumes and has specialized in entrepreneurship, business dynamics, and multiplatforms with more than 100 academic papers.

리처드 슈말렌(Richard Schmalensee)
MIT에서 학사와 박사 학위를 받았다. 동 대학 경영·경제학고 교수이며, 9년 동안 MIT슬론경영대학원 학장을 지냈다. 미국 대통령 경제자문위원으로 일했으며, 산업 조직의 경제학과 정부 정책 및 사업 전략 활용법에 관해 연구한 세계 일류 학자 중 한 사람이다. 12권의 책과 130편이 넘는 학술 논문을 단독 내지 공동으로 저술했고, 2012년 산업조직협회 특별연구원을 지냈다. 마켓 플랫폼 다이나믹스의 회장이며, 국제증권거래소와 국제데이터그룹을 포함해서 여러 매치메이커 기업에서 이사로 일했다. 현재는 전 세계 매치메이커들을 상대로 전략적 이슈들에 대해 조언해주고 있다.

He received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from MIT. He is a professor of business administration and economics at the same university. He has been the dean of MIT Sloan School of Management for nine years. He is one of the world’s foremost scholars who has studied economics of industrial organizations and government policies and methods of using business strategies. He has written 12 books and more than 130 academic papers independently and jointly, and served as a Fellow of the Industrial Organization Association in 2012. He is Chairman of Marketplatform Dynamics and has been a director at several matchmaker companies including the International Stock Exchange and the International Data Group. He is now advising strategic makers around the world on strategic issues.

중국을 뒤흔든 민주화 시위 ‘우산혁명’ – 수많은 젊은이들이 거리에서 읽은 한 권의 정치철학서
2014년 ‘우산혁명’이라는 이름으로 홍콩에서 대규모 민주화 시위가 일어났다. 당시 시위에 나섰던 많은 젊은이들이 거리에서 이 책을 읽었다고 한다. 시민의 참여가 결국 변화를 이끌어낸다는 짜우포충의 메시지가 그들의 마음을 울렸기 때문일 것이다. 짜우포충 역시 우산혁명의 한가운데 서서 학생들과 시위를 이끌었고 그는 결국 ‘불법집회죄’와 ‘경찰공무집행방해죄’로 경찰에 체포됐다. 그는 이러한 자신의 경험을 ‘시민의 불복종’이라고 이름 붙인다.

부조리에 지치고 무기력해지는 시대에 사람들을 희망으로 이끌어줄 책이 있다는 건 크나큰 힘이 된다. 이익과 손해로 양분되는 자본주의의 도시 홍콩에서 “국가의 품격은 어떻게 만들어지는가”는 시민들의 존재감을 키워주었고 그 때문에 출간 이후 지금까지 홍콩인들에게 많은 사랑을 받을 수 있었다.

우리 역시 이 책을 심도 깊게 읽어볼 필요가 있다. 대만에서 ‘문재인 티셔츠’가 팔릴 정도로 아시아 국가들이 한국의 민주화 행보에 주목하고 있는데, 현실의 우리는 국가의 품격을 높일 준비가 얼마나 되어 있는지 자문해볼 일이다. 잘못된 국가를 바로잡은 시기인 지금, 이 책이 더욱 필요한 이유다.

Democracy protests in Hong Kong ‘Umbrella revolution’ – A political philosophy that many young people read on the street
In 2014, a massive democratization demonstration took place in Hong Kong under the name of the umbrella revolution. Many youngsters who went to the demonstration at that time read this book on the street. This is probably because the message of “Zhou, Baosong” that citizens’ participation eventually led to a change in their minds. The author also led the protests with students standing in the middle of the umbrella revolution, and he was eventually arrested by the police for “illegal rallies” and “crimes against police execution”. He calls this experience “civil disobedience.”

It is a great strength to have a book that will lead people to hope in times of absurdity and helplessness. The city of capitalism, divided into profits and losses, in Hong Kong, this book has fostered the presence of citizens and has been loved by the Hong Kong people since its publication.

Korean readers also need to read this book in depth. Asian countries are paying attention to the democratization movement of Korea so that ‘Presidnet Moon’s T-shirt’ is sold in Taiwan. In reality, we are asking how much we are prepared to increase the quality of the country. That is why this book is needed now, when it was time to correct the wrong country.
