고객은 말한다. 엘리베이터 속도가 빨라졌으면 좋겠다고. 기업은 엘리베이터의 윤활유와 모터를 바꿔 속도를 개선해본다. 하지만 불만은 끊이지 않는다. 그러던 어느 날 고객의 불만이 갑자기 잦아든다. 엘리베이터에 달아 놓은 거울 덕분이다. 고객이 100층 높이도 단숨에 오르는 초고속 엘리베이터보다 층을 옮겨가는 동안 느끼는 지루함을 덜어주는 거울에 더 큰 만족감을 느꼈기 때문이다. 유튜브를 세로 화면으로 시청하는 스마트폰 유저는 “메신저를 편하게 확인하기 위해” 작은 화면의 불편함을 감수한다고 말한다. 하지만 정작 그가 원하는 것은 불편을 감수하지 않아도 되는 세로 화면 콘텐츠에 대한 요구다.
소비자는 언뜻 자신이 원하는 것을 정확히 말하는 듯하지만, 정작 진짜 욕구는 꽁꽁 감춰둔 경우가 많다. 다양한 이유로 표현하길 꺼리기도 하고, 또 실제로 자신이 무엇을 원하는지 모르는 경우도 적지 않다. 이처럼 잠재되어 있는 욕구를 ‘언메트 니즈(Unmet Needs)’라고 한다. 이노베이터가 문제의 본질을 꿰뚫어보고, 제대로 된 솔루션을 찾아내기 위해서는 반드시 이 언메트 니즈와 만나야 한다.

Smartphone users who watch YouTube on a vertical screen say they are “inconvenienced by a small screen” to make messaging easier. But what he really wants is a vertical screen content that does not have to be bothered.
Consumers seem to say exactly what they want at first glance, but the real desire is often hidden. We are reluctant to express for a variety of reasons, and we often do not know what we really want. 연세대학교 경제학과를 졸업했고, 서강대학교 디지털미디어 전공으로 석사학위를, 신문방송학과에서 ‘앱 가치 네트워크의 지식 생태계 모델 연구’로 박사학위를 받았다. 현재는 협성대학교 미디어영상광고학과 교수로 재직 중이며 4차 산업혁명 시대에 적응할 수 있는 지식과 역량을 주제로 하는 과목들을 가르치고 있다. 거대한 변화를 가져올 4차 산업혁명에 대해 누구나 쉽고 재미있게 이해하면서 자신의 미래를 준비할 수 있도록 돕기 위해 이 책을 집필했다.

디지털과 인터넷이 가져다준 기술적인 변화 속에서 창비, 동방미디어, 교보문고 등을 거치며 인터넷과 IT, 콘텐츠와 커뮤니티, 그리고 PR 분야에서 20년간 현장 경험을 쌓았다. 연구자로서는 인터넷과 모바일을 둘러싼 지식 생태계에 대한 다수의 논문을 집필하였고, 2014년과 2017년 두 차례에 걸쳐 정부 43개 부처의 온라인 소통에 관한 연구와 컨설팅을 진행하였다. 4차 산업혁명의 현장과 소셜 미디어의 다양한 사례를 공유하는 페이스북 페이지 ‘소셜 미디어 공부벌레 연구소(www.facebook.com/socialswot)’ 도 운영 중이다.

The author graduated from Yonsei University, Department of Economics, received his master’s degree in Sogang University, and his Ph.D. in “Research on knowledge ecosystem model of app value networks” in the Department of Journalism. Currently, he is a professor of media video advertising at Hyupseong National University and teaches subjects that can adapt to knowledge and ability to adapt to the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He wrote this book to help anyone prepare for his future, understanding everyone easily and funly about the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which will bring about enormous change.

He has spent 20 years of field experience in the fields of Internet, IT, contents, community, and public relations in the field of technological change brought about by digital and internet, through Genesis, Dongbang Media and Kyobo Bookstore. As a researcher, he has written a number of articles on the ecosystem of the Internet and mobile ecosystem. He has conducted research and consulting on online communication in 43 ministries in 2014 and 2017. The Facebook page ‘Social Media Wonder Research Institute (www.facebook.com/socialswot)’ is also running, sharing the site of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and various examples of social media.
