수학은 ‘혼자공부’ 하는 시간이 필요하다.
중학생이 되면 수학을 포기하는 학생이 50%를 넘고, 고등학생이 되면 80% 가까이 됩니다. 이 학생들의 공통된 특징은 학원, 과외, 인강에 의존하면서 정작 혼자 공부하는 시간이 없다는 것입니다. 수학은 사회나 과학 같은 지식과목과 달리 자기가 개념을 구성해 가는 이해과목입니다. 기본개념을 가지고 오롯이 자기가 생각하면서 이해하고 체계화해야 합니다. ‘혼자 공부하는 시간’을 거쳐야만 개념의 자기화•내재화가 이루어집니다. 엄마가 어린 자녀의 공부에 관심을 가지는 것은 중요하지만, 문제를 읽어 주고, 식을 세워 주고, 아이에게 계산만 시킨다면 그것은 엄마 공부가 될 뿐 아이 공부가 되지 않습니다. 배우는 학(學)의 과정은 선생님이나 부모님의 가르침을 받되 실력을 만드는 습(習)의 과정은 자기가 혼자서 해내면서 아이 공부가 되게 해야 합니다.
아이의 수학 실력을 만드는 기간은 초1부터 고1까지 10년입니다. 10년 수학공부력을 키워 주는 첫 단추인 초등 1, 2학년 시기에는 ‘매일 조금씩이라도 하자’라는 마음으로 혼자서 꾸준히 공부하는 습관부터 잡아 주세요. 혼자공부의 시작입니다. 그런 다음 자기에게 맞는 공부 시간, 양, 방법, 장소 등 자기 스타일을 찾으면서 중학생이 되면 점점 자기에게 적합한 방식으로 공부를 주도하도록 해야 합니다. 알아서 한다는 게 독학을 의미하는 게 아닙니다. 자기 판단으로 자기의 공부를 이끌도록 하는 것입니다. 부족한 부분을 채우려고 자기 스스로 사교육의 도움을 받는 것은 능동적인 태도입니다. 공교육이냐 사교육이냐보다 어떤 태도로 공부를 하느냐가 중요합니다. ‘기적의 학습법 연구회’는 아이의 ’10년 수학공부력’을 위해 인식을 바꿔야 한다고 생각합니다. ‘학습의 주체는 아이’이고, 부모님은 숨은 조력자이길 바랍니다.
