이 책에는 인간의 ‘자아’와 ‘자기감’이 지닌 놀라운 힘과 더불어 그것의 그림자를 보여주는 최근 신경과학계의 발견이 한가득 담겨 있다. 여기서 ‘그림자’란 코타르증후군, 자폐스펙트럼장애, 조현병, 이인증, 알츠하이머, 황홀경 발작, 유체이탈 등 극적이고도 심각한 정신병리로 인해 ‘자아’와 ‘자기감’에 왜곡이 생겼음을 의미하는 표현이다. 보통 사람들이 겪는 일상과는 전혀 다른, 상상도 할 수 없는 자아 인식을 경험하는 사람들의 ‘이야기’는 기이하고 흥미롭지만 한편으로는 으스스하고, 가끔은 말 못할 고통의 흔적이 느껴지기도 한다.

This book contains the recent neuroscientific discoveries showing the shadows of human ‘ego’ and ‘self-awareness’ as well as its amazing power. The term ‘shadow’ is used to mean that there is a distortion in ‘self’ and ‘sense of self’ due to dramatic and serious psychiatric disorders such as Kotar syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, asthma, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, . The ‘story’ of those who experience an unimaginable self-awareness that is completely different from the daily life of ordinary people is a strange and exciting one, but on the other hand, there is a trace of pain that is sometimes eccentric and sometimes unbearable.

If you read an intimate interview with people who have experienced strange illnesses and symptoms, you will turn from the point of view of their identity. Those appearing in this book have lost some of the things you often think of as ‘myself’ or ‘mine.’ Someone had to cut legs, some lost their vivid feelings, or the story of their lives, and somebody lost themselves and became one with the universe. But the moment you look at them, you get amazing, sometimes heart-pounding insights.

《뉴사이언티스트New Scientist》의 전 부편집장이자 현 고문. UC산타크루즈의 명망 높은 과학저술 프로그램에서 초빙 에디터로 활약했으며, 인도 방갈로르에 있는 국립생물과학센터에서 해매다 과학저널리즘 워크숍을 진행하고 있다. 미국국립과학원 회보의 전문을 담당하는 기획기사 에디터이며, 《내셔널지오그래픽뉴스National Geographic News》, 《디스커버Discover》, 《매터Matter》 등에 기고하고 있다.

미국 PBS의 과학다큐 시리즈 노바NOVA에서 운영하는 ‘The Nature of Reality’ 블로그에 객원 칼럼니스트로서 칼럼을 연재했으며, 엄격한 과학적 접근과 탁월한 문체로 영국 물리학회에서 수여하는 물리학저널리즘상과 영국 과학저술가연합에서 수여하는 최우수탐사저널리즘 상을 수상했다. 첫 책인 《물리학의 경계The Edge of Physics》는 《물리학 세계Physics World》(세계물리학회Institute of Physics 회보)에서 2010년 ‘올해의 책’으로 선정되었다.

세계적 명문 인도공과대학을 졸업하고 워싱턴주립대학교에서 과학석사학위를 받았다. 실리콘밸리에서 소프트웨어 엔지니어로도 일했으며, 그 뒤 UC산타크루스에서 저널리스트의 길에 접어들었다. 지금은 캘리포니아 버클리와 인도의 방갈로르를 오가며 살고 있다.

He has been an invited editor at UC Santa Cruz’s prestigious science writing program and is conducting a multi-science journalism workshop at the National Center for Biological Sciences in Bangalore, India. He is a professional editor for the National Academy of Sciences newsletter and contributes to National Geographic News, Discover Discover and Matter Matter.

He has been featured in PBS’s Science Documentary Series Nova NOVA’s ‘The Nature of Reality’ blog and has been featured in the column as a guest columnist. He has been awarded the British Journal of Physics and the Journal of Physics awarded by the British Physical Society for its rigorous scientific approach and excellent style. Won the Best Exploration Journalism Award. The first book, “The Edge of Physics,” was selected as “Book of the Year” in 2010 at the “Physics World” (World Physics Institute Institute of Physics Newsletter).

He is a graduate of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology and holds a master’s degree in science from Washington State University. He also worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley, and then on the way to journalists at UC Santa Cruz. She now lives in Berkeley, California, and Bangalore, India.
